Specialty Acupuncture

In addition to standard acupuncture for pain and other ailments, we provide specialty skills. Here are some of the categories requiring additional training or experience that makes Mystic River Acpuncture unique.

Trigger Point Acupuncture

Trigger Point Acupuncture is largely based on the work of Dr. Janet Travell, the “grandmother” of physical therapy. Acupuncturist Mark Seem of Tri-State College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture adapted Travell’s work to acupuncture. Dr. Seem and others who developed trigger point release methods have taken acupuncture into the modern world of pain management.

Using the trigger point method, the practitioner isolates a muscle knot and releases it with a gentle tapping of the needle into the area. Acupuncturists who use this technique know how to pay attention to which meridians have been affected and can treat the entire affected channel. When receiving trigger point acupuncture, you may feel your muscle jump as the knot releases, or you may feel some sensation radiating into the muscle tissue around the knot. You may hear this style referred to as dry needling, which is safest when performed by a Licensed Acupuncturist.

Acupuncture For Pregnancy

Acupuncture is a welcome alternative for women who prefer not to use medications during pregnancy and nursing. Acupuncture is a safe and effective way to relieve the normal discomforts of pregnancy, such as morning sickness, fatigue, low back pain, indigestion, and swelling. Non-pregnancy related conditions, including allergies, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, anxiety, insomnia and pain may be treated at the same time.

Acupuncture can be used to turn breech babies, help induce labor and control pain while giving birth. We often teach the father or birth attendant specific acupressure points to help manage birthing pain. Many women get acupuncture when they are near term to promote a healthy birthing process. Postpartum acupuncture will help new mothers regain their strength or help recovery from any complications resulting from the birth.

Acupuncture  For Fertility and IVF

Acupuncture is one of the safest ways to enhance fertility for both men and women. Fertility treatments for women may focus on the menstrual cycle. For men, issues with sperm count or motility can be addressed using acupuncture. Men often find acupuncture helpful for other types of male reproductive issues, as well.

Studies have shown acupuncture to increase the effectiveness of in vitro fertilization (IVF). A 2002 study published by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine found the rate of pregnancies among the participants was 43% for those who had received acupuncture, as opposed to 23% for the control group. Other studies since have reported similar results. We are very proud of all our “acu-babies” at Mystic River Acupuncture!

Smoking Cessation Acupuncture

For smoking cessation, acupuncture needles are used to reduce craving, irritability, insomnia, weight gain and other side effects of quitting smoking, and to support your lungs in regaining full function.

Our smoking cessation program includes the standard auricular acupuncture protocol plus a full evaluation and treatment. The better you feel, the easier it will be for you to give up smoking. Be sure to tell us about other health issues when you come so we can address these during your smoking cessation sessions. Smoking cessation programs work when you are ready to quit. Acupuncture can be used on its own or in conjunction with nicotine patches, hypnosis, pharmaceutical medications, and any other stop smoking plan you find helpful.

Acupuncture For Weight Loss

Weight Loss Acupuncture increases your success rate, especially if you are committed to a good diet and exercise. People often feel more motivated in sticking to their weight loss programs when acupuncture is included.

Acupuncture can reduce cravings, increase will power and stabilize your metabolism so you process food completely. By treating any stress factors, acupuncture will calm your system so you are less likely to eat due life’s pressures. Acupuncture won’t miraculously make you shed those pounds, but it will help you reduce in a healthy way. After you reach your goal, you can come for regular “tune-ups” to help you maintain your proper weight.

Acupuncture for Athletes and Musicians

Acupuncture is an asset to all types of athletes. Whether you are beginning training, dealing with an injury, or trying to keep focused or stay in shape, think of using acupuncture.

Musicians have many of the same issues as athletes do. They can sustain injury from repetitive use of specific parts of their bodies while playing an instrument or dancing. Acupuncture helps relieve performance anxiety, allowing athletes and musicians to feel focused, yet relaxed for events.

Dental Acupuncture

Acupuncture can reduces toothache and jaw pain. It also relieves pain and swelling from dental procedures and enhances healing of the area. Patients often use acupuncture to control pain while waiting for a dentist appointment.

Many patients schedule to come by for a treatment on their way home from dental work. Acupuncture quickly takes care of numbness from Novocaine and reduces the pain so you won’t need as much medication. Patients report that they need no painkillers at all, or are able to use mild over the counter analgesics. We will collaborate with your dentist for serious problems such as TMJ or chronic pain.

Pre-Surgery and Post-Surgery Acupuncture

Acupuncture helps with pre-surgery by increasing circulation and calming anxiety. Post-surgery, it reduces pain and swelling so your body can heal faster. With acupuncture, you will likely need less medication and sleep soundly. The best time to receive treatment after surgery is as soon as possible. Nowadays most physicians are open minded about acupuncture for post-surgical pain control.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an natural alternative to Botox or surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation. Micro-fine needles are used to soften wrinkles, firm skin and relieve tension. You can use acupuncture to look and feel more vibrant. Herbal formulas will help with acne, eczema, and other skin conditions.

Facial Rejuvenation works best with twelve weekly treatments. Tiny needles are inserted in your face, your jaw and cheek-bones. Corresponding points in your hands and feet reinforce the effects. Changes are subtle, and your friends may notice something is different, but won’t know what. You will not look as though you have been through a face-lift or Botox. Rather, you will look healthier, relaxed, better balanced, with a glowing complexion. Shorter facial sessions are also available as an add-on during a regular acupuncture treatment.

Auricular Acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture, also known as ear acupuncture, gained recognition for its use in treatment of addictions. It is also are used to treat acute and chronic pain, symptoms of illnesses, anxiety, and stress related problems. Ear acupuncture is a popular aid for weight loss and smoking cessation, especially when combined with “take home” treatment of ear tacks or seeds taped to your ears to prolong the effect of acupuncture. Advantages of auricular acupuncture are that it can be done quickly and patients do not need to undress.

Chakra Balancing Acupuncture
This type of acupuncture is very helpful to those wanting a more spiritual aspect to treatment. Chakra Balancing with acupuncture involves combining needling ‘opening points’ in hands and feet with direct needling of chakras. Patients rest with the needles in quiet or with their preference of sacred sounds such as singing bowls, native flute, chanting, and hymns. Chakra Balancing promotes sense of well being and encourages creativity.

Battlefield Acupuncture
Battlefield Acupuncture is a form of auricular acupuncture. Based on a French system of ear acupuncture, Battlefield Acupuncture was first developed for the military to minimize the amount of drugs ended in the field. It is also effective for PTSD.
Special Battlefield Acupuncture needles are used in specific ear points. The needles are inserted in a way that allows them to remain in the ear for several days. Battlefield Acupuncture provides quick relief for pain, while relaxing and calming the mind.
