Therapeutic Massage
Mystic River Acupuncture offers a variety of styles of therapeutic massage. Our one-hour massages are a full 60 minutes. You may also choose a half hour or ninety minute session. A specific problem is addressed in a half hour. Ninety minutes can be an extended session, or a full body massage with time to focus on a problem area.
Swedish Massage
This is a basic massage. Most people think of Swedish when they think of massage. You may choose to have a total body massage or opt for the focus to be on specific affected areas. Pressure ranges from medium to light, depending on your needs. Your input is encouraged throughout the session.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot Stone (also referred to as Healing Stone) Massage is a very old technique. Heated stones are applied to different parts of your body while a Swedish massage is given. The stones may either be placed on tense muscles or used to knead a tight area. Warmth from the stones softens your muscles, as the massage melts away your tension. This heat should be comfortable warmth. Be sure to tell your massage therapist if the stones are too hot for you and she can wrap them in a cloth or apply them over the sheet.
Deep Tissue Massage
A more vigorous technique using more intense pressure. Many people prefer this. Deep tissue massage is most often used to treat muscle knots and very tight muscles. Compression of muscles as well as kneading are often performed for deep tissue work.
Medical Massage
Medical Massage is result oriented and specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed by a physician.
A variety of modalities or procedures may be used during the treatment, but the massage is focused only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and doctor’s prescription. Non-prescribed medical massage style therapy may also be administered to address the client’s needs where assessment shows soft-tissue imbalances.
Chair Massage
Chair massage is given with the client sitting fully clothed in a forward leaning massage chair with knee, face, and hand supports. You may have seen this in airports and at health fairs. Usually chair massage is used for back and neck treatments and takes about 15 minutes.
Many patients enjoy a chair massage before or after their acupuncture. Some enjoy a massage while they wait for friends or family who have come for an appointment. Others like to stop by for a relaxing moment in a stressful day. Chair massage is a pleasant way to introduce friends and family to the benefits of massage.

Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy (AOBT)
This massage is administered with the therapist’s feet. While holding on to bars mounted securely to the ceiling, the therapist stands on the table and applies pressure to your body with her feet. The pressure applied can be adjusted to give you a relaxing experience or a more therapeutic deep tissue massage. In particular, AOBT opens up the spinal column and is an excellent way to relieve sore, aching backs. Your Ashiatsu therapist may follow up with Swedish style attention to your neck or other areas that prefer a “hands on” approach. Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people try it.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is used to prepare athletes for major events and to help them during training. Many athletes find massage an essential part of their training program.
Regular massage promotes good circulation in muscles used when competing at a high level. Massage enhances ability to focus and reduces apprehension that may accompany performance.
Massage is an excellent way to deal with sports injuries. Massage can reduce healing time, enabling the athlete to get back to training sooner. Massage can be used in conjunction with other therapies or medical intervention, including physical therapy or even surgery.
